The 2026 Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards application is open and accepting nominees across all regions in Illinois.
The GVSA awards honor individual volunteers through a statewide program, highlighting the importance of volunteerism and community service in Illinois. U.S. citizenship is not required for nomination, but Illinois residency is. There is no specific timeline for volunteer activities; all efforts and ongoing projects are eligible. Self-nominations and multiple nominations per application will be automatically disqualified. This award offers a unique feature: if the nominee passes at any time during the application process, they may receive the award posthumously. It will be presented to the family during the award ceremony.
Applications are being accepted September 29th through November 14th.
Applications should provide information about the individual’s volunteerism efforts, including how they have met the community's needs, their impact, and innovation, as
well as supporting documents showcasing the impact of their work.
Awardees are divided by geographical regions and include the following outstanding volunteer categories:
• Senior Volunteer (65+)
• Adult Volunteer (19-64)
• Youth Volunteer (18 & Under)
• AmeriCorps Seniors Member (Foster Grandparent, RSVP, or Senior Companion)
• AmeriCorps Member
Winners will be formally recognized at an in-person award luncheon in the Spring.
